Pick a villa with a real bed for every child, and a second bedroom if you can. A family room puts four people in one space for a week, and a 6-year-old’s bedtime becomes everyone’s bedtime. Seaplanes fly in daylight only. Land late in Malé and you’ll need a plan for the night. All nine villas give each child a bed.

A villa that sleeps four on paper sometimes means one shower and a sofa bed. Check the bathroom count and the bed list before you pay.

• Real Beds for Both Children: Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives sets a king bed and two twin beds in its family villa, which gives each child a bed, and Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi pairs a king bed with built-in bunks in a one-bedroom villa. Joy Island Maldives lists two extra-large double beds plus two sofa beds, so count the doubles when you divide the family.

Speedboat or Seaplane With Children

The transfer comes at the end of a long travel day, when a 6-year-old has the least patience left.

• Dining Beyond the Buffet: Specialty restaurants need pre-booking at Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives and at Siyam World Maldives, which lists several of them beside its buffet. At Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi the Sunset Restaurant is kept for Ocean Villa guests, and its à la carte menu is charged to every guest.

Kids Clubs, Pools and Shallow Water

A 6-year-old cares more about the nearest pool than the villa size. Look at what each resort has for children beyond the club.

• What the Club Runs: Kidz World at Siyam World Maldives runs crafts, kids’ yoga, a junior marine biologist programme and face painting for children from age 3. At Joy Island Maldives, Kiddie Cove is the club for children aged 3 to 12.
• Pools Made for Small Swimmers: Sun Siyam Vilu Reef and NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi both have a kids’ pool. The infinity pool at NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi has a shallow end.

Villas That Sleep Six

Grandparents, a third child or a second family change which villa works.

• Four Adults and Two Children: Cocoon Maldives and Joy Island Maldives list the family villa at four adults and two children, or six adults. Sun Siyam Vilu Reef sleeps six too, as four adults and two children.

Villa Names and Sizes That Differ

Resort sites and reservation pages don’t always agree on what a villa is called or how big it is.

• Different Names for One Villa: NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi sells the same villa on its own site as the Grand Atlantis 2 Bedroom Overwater Villa with private pool and Jacuzzi. Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi lists the one-bedroom villa simply as Family Villas.
• Size Gaps Between Sources: Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives gives its two-bedroom family villa as 213 m2 on the resort’s site, while the reservation page says 253 m2. The one-bedroom family villa at Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi is 46.5 m2 on the resort’s site and 59 m2 on the reservation page. Compare villas on the resort’s own figure.

1. Which kids clubs take a 6-year-old?

Kids clubs at Sun Siyam Vilu Reef and Cocoon Maldives take children up to age 12. The official pages for Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives, NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi and Fushifaru Maldives give no age range. Ask each of those resorts whether a 6-year-old can join without a parent, and whether a parent has to stay.

2. When are the busiest and quietest months?

Peak season runs from December to April, and January and February are the busiest months, based on the Ministry of Tourism’s bed-night figures. May, June and September are the quietest. Quiet months bring lower rates at most of these resorts, though some nightly rates in those months sit above peak, so check your exact dates.

3. Do the villas have a bathtub?

Most do, though the lagoon villa at Siyam World Maldives has showers only. Fushifaru Maldives lists two bathrooms with a walk-in shower and a bath, and Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives has a whirlpool bathtub and rain shower. Sun Siyam Vilu Reef and Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi list a bath in their bathrooms too.

4. Are taxes included in the nightly rate?

Not in full. The reservation page adds a separate line for taxes and charges at checkout, and it rises with each guest and each night. Read that line for your own party on every villa you shortlist. It is separate from the nightly rate quoted here, so compare resorts on the final total for your dates.

5. Is a cot available for a younger sibling?

Cots are available on request at several of the villas. The rate rows for Siyam World Maldives, Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives and NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi each show a cot on request. Ask the resort whether an extra child changes the villa’s occupancy limit before you book, because the rate rows are priced for two adults and two children.

The two-bedroom pool villas run from 170 m2 at Siyam World Maldives to 370 m2 at NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi. The family beach villas at Cocoon Maldives and Joy Island Maldives are 100 m2 each. Check the bed list on each rate, since floor area doesn’t show how many bedrooms a villa has.
