Book by the wind, not the brochure. From mid-October to early May the wind blows from the east, and on its strongest days red flags close Chaweng and Lamai to swimmers. The north coast, from Mae Nam round to Bang Rak, sits sheltered from it and stays swimmable. So a winter trip and a summer trip want different beaches. Here’s where I’d book, depending on when you land.

Which Koh Samui Beach Is Calm in Which Month

Samui’s wind swaps sides twice a year, and the calm water moves with it. Match the beach to the month you travel.

• Mid-October to early May: The wind blows from the east, so the surf lands on Chaweng, Lamai and the rest of the east coast. Mae Nam, Bophut and Bang Rak on the north coast sit in its lee and stay flat enough for an easy swim.
• Sheltered water on the east side? Choeng Mon and the stretch of north Chaweng inside the reef are the most sheltered spots on the east coast in the windy months. Elsewhere on Chaweng, January brings rough days with dangerous rips.
• What the west coast gives you: Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam stay calmer through October and November while storms hit the east coast. The sea floor at Lipa Noi is flat sand with no rocks underfoot.

Koh Samui Beaches at Low Tide

On some Samui beaches the tide pulls a long way out. Check how far the water drops before you pick a room on the sand.

• Lipa Noi: Shallow water runs far out, and low tide uncovers wide flats of sand. Plan your sea swims around high tide there.
• Choeng Mon: The sand slopes gently, so small children wade about 20 metres out before it gets deep. At low tide you can walk across to the small islet off the beach.
• North Chaweng: A reef runs offshore at the north end of Chaweng, which keeps the water shallow a long way out. That same reef breaks the swell when the east wind blows.

Red Flags, Rips and Jellyfish on Koh Samui

Flags go up on the busy east-coast beaches when the sea turns. Read them before you wade in.

• Red flag means stay out: The Samui Rescue Center counts Chaweng and Lamai as high-risk in the monsoon, and a red flag means no swimming. Strong east winds raise them outside the monsoon too, with waves of one to three metres.
• The rocks at Laad Koh: Waves have swept tourists off the rocks at the Laad Koh viewpoint, south of Chaweng. Stay off the rocks there when the surf is up.
• Box jellyfish: Box jellyfish turn up off Samui and Koh Phangan, more in the rainy months and around dusk. Swim inside netted areas where a beach has them; hotels keep vinegar for stings.

Where to Stay in Koh Samui for the Beach

Each Samui beach comes with a different evening. Pick by what you want after sunset.

• Chaweng: The island’s main nightlife sits behind the sand, and it carries into the night. Vendors work the beach all day.
• Choeng Mon: This small cove has soft white sand. Bang Rak and the Big Buddha sit on the next bay west.
• Mae Nam: Long, quiet and flat, with water that barely sees a wave in the windy months. Algae and cloudy water show up some weeks in February and March.
• Bophut: Fisherman’s Village puts restaurants and a walking street right behind the sand. Boats moor in the bay in front.

Best Time to Book a Koh Samui Beach Resort

Samui’s hotels fill on their own calendar, because the monsoon here arrives late in the year. Rates follow the crowds.

• January to March: Hotel occupancy peaks in January, and the island stays busy through March. Book these months well ahead.
• Christmas and New Year: The last two weeks of December run close to full. Book this fortnight before anything else in the year.
• July and August: European summer holidays bring a second peak. Kimpton Kitalay Samui, SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort and Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui charge more on an August weekend than in March.
• October and November: Occupancy falls to its lowest as the rain arrives, and rates drop with it. May and June bring a smaller lull.

Koh Samui Rainy Season vs the Andaman Coast

Samui’s rain runs on the Gulf of Thailand’s timetable, not the Andaman coast’s. Book on Thailand-wide weather advice and you’ll land in the wrong season.

• October to December: This is Samui’s wet season, and November is the wettest month of the year. The east-coast sea turns rough and grey.
• When the Andaman coast is wet: From May to September the Andaman coast takes its monsoon while Samui stays comparatively dry. That makes Samui the summer pick for a Thai beach trip.
• February to April: These are Samui’s driest months, with February the driest of the year. Calm water on the north coast and dry days make this the easiest stretch for a beach trip.

1. Are the beaches in front of Koh Samui resorts private?

No, beaches in Thailand belong to everyone, and no Thai beach is legally private. Thailand’s prime minister has said publicly that hotels can’t claim the sand in front of them for their own guests. 2. How do you get to Koh Samui?

Fly straight to Samui’s own airport from Bangkok, the quickest route and the dearest. The cheaper way is a flight to Surat Thani on the mainland, a road transfer to Donsak pier, then a ferry. Catamarans cross in 45 minutes to an hour, and car ferries take about an hour and a half. Ferries land at different piers on Samui’s west coast, so check the pier printed on your ticket.

3. Is Bophut Beach good for swimming?

For a swim, yes, though not for clear water. The bay sits sheltered from the east wind, so it stays calm through the windy months when Chaweng closes. Patches of algae make the water murky over the seabed, and boats and jet skis work the bay. Swim close to your hotel’s stretch, and save snorkelling for a boat trip.

The south end of Lamai is, with deep water that suits a proper swim. The northeast end turns very shallow over sharp rocks and almost dries out at low tide, with stones and seagrass underfoot. Pick a hotel toward the southern half if swimming matters to you. On east-wind days, check the flags before you go in.
