The historic Wellington Cable Car is a short ride from the heart of Wellington to Kelburn Lookout where visitors can witness a panoramic view of the city. It is also an entry point to some of Wellington’s most popular attractions including the Botanic Gardens, Carter Observatory, and Zealandia.

  • The Ride – From the Lambton Quay Terminus to the top, there are 2 more stop where passengers can get off, Talavera Stop and Salamanca Stop. At Salamanca Stop, you can visit the Victoria University, but most visitors make their way to the top to Kelburn Terminus where the Botanic Garden is located. A complete 1 way ride last approximately 5-10 minutes.

  • Cruise Days – On days where cruise ships stop in Wellington, the queue can be busy in the morning. If there’s no rush, catch the Cable Car in the afternoon, but even if you do arrive in the morning on these days, it’s about a 20-30 minute wait from the ticket booth to the street.

  • 1 way or 2 way ticket – You’ll only need a 1 way ticket If you’re thinking about going to Zealandia, since there is a free direct shuttle from Zealandia back to Wellington city. Similarly, if you’re planning to go on the Main Downhill Walk at the Botanic Gardens, there’s no point getting a 2 way ticket. Make sure you plan your route for the day before purchasing the Cable Car ticket.

There are a number of signs on the streets to guide visitors to the ticketing booth for the Cable Car.

Buses from cruises – Buses cost $10 per person and you can purchase them when you get off your cruise ship. From Brandon St drop off point in the city, it is only a 2 minute walk to Lambton Quay Terminus.

    Fantastic attraction

On last month I and some 3 colleagues were sent to New Zealand for a training. Our office sponsored the trip. One delegate from other company took us to Wellington Cable Car, a wonderful experience we had there. It was very fun, and I wish I take my family along with me to have such a wonderful fun. The price is cheap, though for a few minutes. I can recommend the Wellington cable car for every family that wants to have a unique fun

    Fantastic attraction

What I remember most about this experience was the incredible view, it was breathtaking. A bonus was it stops in the botanical gardens, which is a magical place I will never forget; I highly recommend this experience.
The only downside was the line, might be less of a line in the morning, either way well worth the wait!

    Fantastic attraction

The cable car was one of my favourite experiences in Wellington. Starting in central Wellington, the car transports you up to an amazing view over the city. You can take a return trip back to the city, but we enjoyed wandering through the botanical gardens and the rose garden on the way down. Would definitely recommend.

The cable car in Wellington is a fun ride and a cool experience. Take a one way trip and walk down throught the beautiful botanical gardens. There is a nice view over Wellington from the top, where you arrive with the cable car.

Our family really enjoyed this experience. It is less than $10 return trip and has a few different stops where you can chose to get off. The Kelburn Terminus was the best part as there is a lookout with some incredible views!!

Great for kids. The cable car itself is fun and children love it. The museum at the top is cute and a quick diversion. The best part though, is the gardens at the top, wander down to find an amazing children’s play park.

The cable car is a piece of Wellington heritage. Operating daily it can be a commutator for Students as they head up to Kelburn the home of Victoria University. You can also reach the botanical gardens
