Dunedin is a charming city in the South Island of New Zealand, just under 5 hours south of Christchurch.
Larnach Castle is the only castle in New Zealand, and serves not only as a historical site, but a restaurant, event venue and accommodation as well. The views over the Otago Harbour are delightful. Wander the gardens, or explore the old stables, or the Castle, including the tower and ballroom (now housing a café). The Castle is on the Otago Peninsula which also is home to the Royal Albatross Centre, the only mainland Albatross colony in the world. Penguin Place is also on the peninsula.
Kids & Family
Delight the kids with a drive up the world’s steepest residential street, Baldwin Street. A trip to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory is exciting. Free chocolate, taste cocoa beans, see a ton of melted chocolate in the chocolate drop. Try the latest flavours at the shop after your tour.
Catch a train and go on one of Dunedin’s Rail trips – The Taieri Gorge Railway is very popular. On this journey inland the train travels up an ancient Gorge, through 10 tunnels and numerous bridges and viaducts. Or perhaps a Seaside journey to Moeraki, a place known for its unusual boulders, or to Oamaru, known for the beautiful white stone found here.
