WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo is a unique inner city zoo attraction in the heart of Darling Harbour. Different from most zoo attractions, the WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo combines authentic theming with the highest quality modern design to recreate Australia’s famous animal habitats. Inside there are a wide variety of both small indoor, and large outdoor enclosures, including koalas on the roof. There’s more here than meets the eye, despite the relatively small size of the zoo, and there are more than 10 unique habitat zones in the WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo, full of incredible animals and other Australia fauna.

  • Daily Feedings and Talks – The WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo offers a variety of tours and feeding presentations throughout the day in each of the habitat areas. Learn about everything from crocodiles and kangaroos to cassowaries from the expert zookeepers, and see the animals being fed.

  • Behind The Scenes Tour – Take a 45 minute tour behind the scenes at WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo where you’ll get to see the food-prep kitchen, the reptile rooms and the insect house as well as learn about a day in the life of a zookeeper.

  • Koala and Python Encounters – Your chance to get up close and personal with either a koala of a python and have some pictures taken of your animal encounter. Also includes informative talks with zookeepers.

  • Koala Breakfast Experience – An exclusive opportunity not just to meet the resident koalas at WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo but also to have a hot buffet breakfast in the zoo’s bush garden. Happening in the morning, before the zoo is open when the koalas are most active, the Koala Breakfast also includes an informative talk, and a chance to get up close with a koala for a photograph.

Construction started in 2004, and was completed in 2006, under the site’s original name: Sydney Wildlife World. Its unusual location right in the centre of Sydney made the zoo very popular, and it was awarded The Australian’s Best Family Focused Tourism Destination in 2007.

The building’s design is also unusual, as most of the public areas are entirely enclosed and airconditioned. Only the upper level exhibits are open air, enclosed by stainless steel mesh supported by beams that were designed to look like the mythical Rainbow Serpent from above.

It was acquired and expanded in 2011, and renamed as WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo.

Interesting Facts

  • WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo cost 52 million dollars to construct.
  • Insider, there’s a 1 kilometre walkway that moves through 7,000 square metres of enclosures.
  • The largest exhibit in the zoo is the semi-arid kangaroo habitat, which measures 800 square metres and consists of 250 tonnes of red sand transported to Sydney from central Australia, as well as fill-sized bottle trees.

Good enough if you don't have much time

This zoo will satisfy your want to see local Australian wildlife. We got the combo ticket (with SEA Life and Madame Tussauds) – I think that’s the more cost-effective choice. The place is small but if you’re after getting acquainted with some koalas and kangaroos, you can do that here as well. Very convenient as it’s inside the city. You can take a photo with a koala at the top floor as well. I really loved the wombat – so fluffy! Other than that, not really too exciting.

It is worth to visit Wild Life, if there is no time to visit a “full zoo” or go outside Sydney to plunge into the real Wild Life. The fauna of Australia is sufficiently represented here. The whole mini-zoo can be run for 15 minutes. You can participate in feeding kangaroos. Personally, I went there purposefully to see koalas, and my hopes were justified.

It is not very big but you can pet some cute little animals. Kangaroos were just lying around and I always like to watch them. The whole zoo is set up so that you get a good view of the animals. Good if you’ve not seen native Australian animals before.

    Needs improvement

The animals seemed cramped and bored. This is yet another zoo that claims to be focused on conservation but seems more like profit is the aim. It is lovely to see these animals up close but would love to see better living conditions on my return.

This zoo has everything you would expect from a zoo really -Pretty standard kind of place, had some cool reptiles and the employees are very friendly. Good if you’ve not seen native Australian animals before and a nice place to go if you have kids
