20 Best Launceston Attractions Every Tourist Must See

The second city of Tasmania, Launceston was one of the first towns settled in Australia. It is the centre of a historic area, and has plenty of Colonial and Victorian buildings, together with scenery and wilderness on its doorstep.

Right in the city is Cataract Gorge which is one of the top attractions in Launceston. Just a 1.5 km from the city centre is the impressive Gorge, now with parklands, gardens, walking tracks and the world’s longest single span chairlift. Make your visit a day event with the swimming pool, BBQ area and cafes in the area.

In Launceston, the North and South Esk Rivers meet, and form the Tamar River which then flows to the sea through the Tamar Valley. This is a pastural area with vineyards, orchards, lavender fields and grasslands. Attractive historic towns offer delightful places to explore. Also on the river is the Tamar Island Wetland area, a conservation reserve and walkway to a day of exploration on this small island. Further afield can be found the Bay of Fires, often called one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
