Only Dubai would, in the desert, consider building close to the biggest indoor ski center in the world with real snow, in a mall. The ski slope, located in the Mall of the Emirates (also one of the biggest of its kind), includes a 400 meter long ice run and a 3000 square meter snow park play area.  After days of sweltering heat and tropical beaches what could be a better idea than cooling off and charging down one of Ski Dubai’s 5 exciting slopes or chilling out with a couple of their real antarctic King Penguins.

Highlights

  • 5 majestic slopes – Each slope is for different skill levels and changes regularly. Whatever skill level you are and weather you prefer ski or snowboard – there’s something for everyone. The slopes are crafted with real snow that is recycled every night.
  • PENGUINS!!! – Ski Dubai is host to a colony of Gentoo and King Penguins that you can actually meet. The regular package gives you an up close and personal experience with your own penguin.
  • 3000 Sq-Meter Play Area – Ice slides, toboggan runs, climbing towers and snowballs mean hours of enjoyment for children who are otherwise too small for the slopes.

  • Sub Zero Zip Line – the first of its kind in the world, the Snow Bullet (aptly named) whisks you above the skiers heads along the whole 150 meters of track.
  • A Ski Lift – This one’s a bit obvious – we know, but its an important component in harnessing the intoxicatingly cool vibe of the Middle East’s first and only indoor (or outdoor) ski slope.

  • Christmas – Though Dubai is primarily a Muslim country, Christmas is a holiday that is hosted, entertained and celebrated throughout. The beaches, malls and water parks of Dubai make it perfect for a Christmas getaway – Ski Dubai is irreplaceable in capturing the classic Christmas feeling.

What to Wear

  • Hat and gloves – for health and safety reasons Ski Dubai is not permitted to rent gloves or hats. There is a store where you can purchase them but if you know you will be visiting Ski Dubai, it may be a good idea to bring some of your own along.
  • Long sleeve shirt or spare shirt – a spare shirt might be a good idea for extra layering if you feel cold.
  • Ski Dubai provides boots, jacket and socksno need to worry about those.

Tips

  • Be prepared for real cold – the temperature at the ski slope is a constant -4 degrees during the day and -6 degrees at night which can be a real shock after a week or so in the desert. Be prepared and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate afterwards.
  • Explore the Mall – Ski Dubai is located inside one of the worlds biggest malls – the Mall of the Emirates. The ski trip would be perfect to work around a leisurely day out at a very impressive mall.

Transport

  • Bus – From the center of the city you can catch the Metro red line to the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station.
  • Taxi – Most, if not all, taxis will know Mall of the Emirates. It is located along one of Dubai’s main highways, Ghweifat International Hwy.
  • Bike – Travel down Jumeirah Rd from the city center and turn right when you see Mall of the Emirates metro station. There is bike parking inside the car park.

Interesting Facts

  • The very first indoor Black Run is located at Ski Dubai. A black run is a particularly difficult ski slope only for the well practiced or professional.
  • The snow at the slope is not created by chipping ice like many other indoor slopes. Instead they seed moisture to create real snow almost naturally. This gives the snow a genuine feel and texture while still being easy to manage, clean and maintain.
  • Ski Dubai earned the 2007 Thea Outstanding Achievement Award by the Themes Entertainment Association.
  • Several documentaries (available of Youtube) have been made about the construction and building of Ski Dubai which is heralded as a great achievement in modern architecture.
