Borobodur is undoubtedly the icon of Yogyakarta. This is probably the most visited tourist destination in the city, aside from Batik shopping centers. This historical site can be reached by private transport from the city proper. A little hiking is needed too so prepare to wear sneakers and comfortable clothing. To save money, it is best to let someone arrange your transport from the city and back. The Borobudur sunrise is the best in this part of the world. If you intend to stay long, prepare a brim hat and don't forget to put on sunscreen and sunglasses.

Where else can you find better Batik clothes than in Yogyakarta. Batik Seno offers handmade designs that is unique in every way. You can buy a fabric, which you can use for your own design or buy ready made RTWs at the stores shop. Considering that all designs are handmade, each design should be worth the price. The place is accessible from any point in the city centre using taxis.

Mangga Dua spells S-H-O-P-P-I-N-G! The place is great for bargains but be sure to buy in bulk for better price. Some shops do not even sell retails. Mangga Dua is where you can buy affordable clothes and shoes with the latest design, either made in China, Korea or local produce. The only downside, the mall is quite messy. A zoning is suggested so shoppers do not need to go to all unnecessary places. How to shop there? Be sure to know how to haggle. Prices could be half as high or half as low depending on your negotiation skills.

One of the best places to go to in Jakarta if you got the kids in tow. You can practically leave the kids inside to be entertained and try all the possible roles or jobs. I had fun watching my kids catch a criminal and put him to jail in their police role play while my youngest was making Indomie noodles at the Indomie station. As a bonus, you can bring the finished Indomie mie goreng too!

The Baywalk Mall is a worthy addition to the tourist areas in the big city. The mall is certainly a great alternative to the more popular Taman Anggrek and Central Park. lt is not only a place to shop but the reclaimed viewing area provides that extra feel of standing above seawater and enjoy the sea breeze. Being in a fishing area, I wouldn't vouch for the smell of the sea, fresh air vs fresh fish? Still, the mall is a welcome change to the box types Jakarta malls. You can also enjoy your sunset view while dining in one of the restaurants facing the ocean.
