Amy Richardson

Hi, I'm Amy! I love to travel both close to home wherever I am in Australia or far, far away. I have so many attractions on my bucket list, and ticking them off is one of my favourite things to do. You can read about the ones I've visited on this site!

The main beaches in Thailand are quite spoiled by trash and pollution from boats. Your best bet is to book tours that take you out to the islands that offer nicer, cleaner beaches. That being said, you can still relax on Patong Beach, just laying out or getting a massage. But you may be bothered by the locals trying to sell their goods.

Kata Beach is quite nice and fairly clean. I prefer it over Patong Beach. There are restaurants nearby and plenty of places to stay in Karon, where Kata Beach is located. A nice place to spend the day relaxing, swimming and hanging with friends or family.

Unfortunately when we visited the weather was not great, with a lot of rain and rough seas. So we didn't spend much time swimming at the beach. However, it is quite nice in good weather. It also nice and long, so makes for a good walk or a quicker way to get from one end of Koh Samui to the other!

Unfortunately many (not all) beaches in Thailand are spoiled with trash and pollution from boats. Whilst Ao Nang Beach is not terrible, it is certainly not the best beach I have been to. In fact, I didn't really bother swimming in it. On the upside, there are things to do and places to eat nearby.

Whilst Poda Island is beautiful (and much nicer and cleaner than Ao Nang), I am only giving it 3 stars. This is because you have to pay to catch a long boat to the island where you will stay until your boat returns in the afternoon. This would be ok if the boat company you paid told you this, but we were not informed that we could not simply catch one of the many boats coming back earlier. We were also told that there were places to eat on the island, which was not the case. We could purchase a packet of 2 minute noodles and a coconut. This may have changed in the past 2 years, but you should be prepared to potentially spend a long day on the island, so take plenty of water and food and get as much information from the boat operator as possible, before departing.
