Best Areas To Stay Near Glacier National Park

  • Whitefish – Whitefish town is on Whitefish Lake with fantastic views and a wide range of recreational activities. If you stay here, have a look at Lodge at White Fish Lake. With two swimming pools, hot tubs, and a private beach, it’s one of the more highly recommended places to stay. Alternatively, check out Duck Inn Lodge which is a cozy B&B about 2.5 miles south along the Whitefish River.
  • Columbia Falls – Columbia Falls is nestled in the scenic Flathead Valley about 10 miles due southeast of Whitefish Lake. The town is surrounded by mountain peaks and is popular for outdoor activities and winter skiing. For a relaxing stay, North Forty Resort has beautiful log cabins, while Meadowlake Resort & Condos (photo above) is closer to town near the golf course.
  • Somers – Somers is a small town on the northwest tip of Flathead Lake between the Swan Range to the east and Mission Mountains to the west. Couples will enjoy Coyote Bluff Estate, an adult-only luxury lodge. It’s about 3 miles out of town with elevated views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
  • Kalispell – Kalispell is a semi-urban area with its own airport situated midway between Whitefish and Flathead Lakes. It’s a convenient and central location for getting to Glacier National Park. For this area, stay at The Garrison Inn. It is a picturesque wood cabin lodging just outside of town with fantastic mountainous scenery.

Best Things To Do Near Glacier National Park

  • Whitewater Rafting – Middle Fork has rapids suitable for all levels and is conveniently located in the Whitefish, Kalispell, and Flathead Lake areas. Alberton Gorge along Clark Fork River offers a more scenic experience, while places like Blackfoot River and North Fork are quite remote. You can find rafting and adventure companies online or check with your lodgings.
  • Driving Tours – Going-to-the-Sun Road is an iconic scenic road that runs 50 miles along the width of Glacier National Park. It reaches an elevation of 6,646 feet at Logan Pass. A classic tour on a vintage Red Jammer can be particularly memorable. Another scenic road is Many Glacier Road on the park’s east side.
  • Hiking – There are numerous hiking trails around Glacier National Park. The park itself has over 700 miles of hiking trails through alpine meadows, glacier valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and up to rugged peaks. Three well-known trails are Highline, Grinnell Glacier, and Hidden Lake trails.
  • Boat Tours – Boat tours offer stunning panoramic views of mountainous scenery amid clear reflective waters. Lake McDonald Lodge operates boat tours, while at Two Medicine Lake boat trips run from the General Store. At St. Mary Lake, the Glacier Park Boat Company operates scenic cruises. All cruises operate in summer months only and last around 45 min to 1 hour.
  • Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing – The Apgar area of Glacier National Park has several groomed ski trails, such as the Apgar Loop, perfectly suited to beginners and families. More experienced skiers can try the Swiftcurrent Nature or Redrock Falls trails. For all levels of snowshoeing, there’s the Trail of the Cedars, or try the Hidden Lake Overlook Trail along the stunning Logan Pass area. If you’re looking for a snowshoeing experience, there’s the Highline Trail.

Entry fees vary according to vehicle type and duration of stay. For day visitors there are designated picnic and barbecue areas with public conveniences.
  • Shuttle Service (Going-to-the-Sun Road)The Glacier National Park Shuttle operates within the park boundaries from late June to early September and you can board at designated stops along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Sun Tours Shuttle provides a shuttle between Whitefish, Montana, and Glacier National Park. Various tour or shuttle companies also cater to customized needs.
  • Red Bus ToursRed Bus Tours are the most iconic way to take in scenic locations around Glacier National Park. They have a fleet of 1930s convertible red single-deck buses.
  • Bicycles – There are no bicycle rentals as such in the park, so you should make arrangements with a private tour or rental company. Tour companies often have drop-off services and some receipts can be used for park entry. There are various bicycles to choose including fat-wheeled and electric bikes.
  • Hiking – If you choose to hike through Glacier National Park, you have to stick to designated hiking trails. Campsites all have areas set aside for walk-in visitors on a first-come first-serve basis. There is a walk-in permit to pay as well as nightly camping fees if you’re planning for more than a day trip.
