5. SO/ Auckland

SO/ Auckland claims to have a unique recipe to create a soulful experience and we couldn’t agree more. It’s a cool and funky hotel that stands out for its distinctive style and character. Rooms were created using Auckland’s volcanic origins for inspiration and are furnished to high standards with state of the art technology. Fashionable bathrooms contain separate rain showers and bathtubs. Bypassing traditional room titles here, instead, you’ll find room options include things like ‘So Cozy’, ‘So Suite’, and ‘So Lofty’. You’ll also get to choose one of five elements for your room which are reflected in the aesthetics and design. Choices include ‘Solid’ which favors opulent tones of black and gold, ‘Vapour’ which consists of open plan space for escapism, and ‘Liquid’, featuring warm tones which creates the illusion you’re surrounded by lava – note that certain elements are only included in specific room types. You’ll be blown away by the gastronomy range here too. Mornings begin with one of the best breakfast buffets we’ve ever seen, and evenings can be spent at Harbour Society where renowned chef Marc de Passorio cooks up Michelin-worthy dishes. 13. Park Hyatt Auckland

This brand new hotel has a nautical theme running throughout, which is fitting considering the hotel is built on land formerly used by Team New Zealand. Wonderful views of the Waitematā Harbour are visible from almost everywhere in the hotel, including rooms that are all outward-facing. When we say the rooms are spacious, we mean it – they begin at 47sqm which is almost double the size when compared to other standard hotel rooms in the city. Large beds, walk-in wardrobes, living areas, and marble bathrooms with both deep soaking tubs and walk-in showers come as standard. They are adorned with traditional décor and custom-designed tukutuku panels in a nod to Māori culture and have luxury amenities such as Le Labo® toiletries, minibars, Nespresso coffee machines, and STAYCAST. You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to eating and drinking. Romantic meals can be taken at the hotel’s signature restaurant Onemata which has an entirely local feel with a menu driven by the finest produce from local farmers, fishermen, and seasonal ingredients. The Living Room serves up light meals and à la carte breakfast and The Pantry is your best bet for a quick grab and go coffee or lunch. With an extensive list of classic cocktails with a local twist and fortified spirits, Captain’s Bar is the place to enjoy an evening out. Whether you’re swimming, or simply relaxing on the pool deck, don’t forget to visit the 25 meter infinity pool which is a must for sweeping views of Wynyard Quarter’s Lighter Basin.

14. Hilton Auckland

The Hilton brand needs little introduction, with Auckland’s offering sitting prominently on the end of Princes Wharf and giving way to a nautical-inspired style. Popular attractions such as The Cloud Convention Center, the New Zealand Maritime Museum, and bustling downtown is a short ten-minute walk away. Modern rooms feature crisp Italian furniture and stylish granite bathrooms complete with separate bathtubs and walk-in showers. LCD TVs, Wi-Fi, and DVD players (not available in all rooms), coupled with comfortable beds and seating areas make relaxing in your room most welcome. For the views alone, go for one of the Deluxe Harbour View rooms, or a Suite so you can sit on your balcony, or gaze through floor to ceiling windows at the Auckland Harbour, and islands of the Hauraki Gulf. For fresh, sustainably sourced seafood, look no further than on-site FISH Restaurant, where this morning’s catch of the day can be savoured in a bright and picturesque setting thanks to the walls of windows. The Bellini bar is a must to sit and enjoy a drink watching the action of the harbour, or for something a little different, ask about the Bellini’s signature Cocktail classes. A highlight of the hotel is the unique view of the harbour from the outdoor lap pool’s underwater viewing window.

15. The Sebel Auckland Viaduct Harbour

When the hotel overlooks the grand yachts of the Viaduct Harbour, you know it’s a swanky place. A waterfront escape, just minutes from Auckland’s Central Business District, this luxury hotel hits the mark for both location and style. Accommodation here is apartment-style but with all the grandeur and convenience of a hotel. Think well-appointed and fully-service studios and suites containing kitchen facilities, in-room laundry, private balconies, and satellite TV. All rooms also contain an inviting lounge area where you can put your feet up and watch movies, and bathrooms complete with private bathtubs. There’s no on-site restaurant at this hotel, but if you don’t feel like making your own meals in your kitchenette, 24-hour in-room dining is available, and the Viaduct Harbour is home to many gourmet restaurants. The harbour is also an ideal departure point for a relaxing harbour cruise, or those feeling more adventurous can go jet boating. Consider taking a romantic trip to one of the surrounding islands, which couldn’t be any easier with the Auckland Ferry Terminal just around the corner. We recommend a wine-tasting tour on Waiheke Island, known as the “island of wine” thanks to its many wineries and vineyards.
