Why is Alcatraz Island Famous?

Before Alcatraz became a maximum-security prison, it was the site of the first lighthouse on the coast of California. Of course, it is most well-known for its infamous residents who were imprisoned there from 1934 to 1963. These include prisoners like Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Stroud, to name a few. Since 1972, the island is preserved by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Today, its history and natural beauty attract visitors from all over the world. The good news is that Alcatraz is just a short ferry ride away from San Francisco and there are plenty of tours available.

Basic tours start at $34 USD but these are mostly pass-by cruises that don’t get you on the island itself.
