63 Best Lake District Attractions Every Tourist Must See

The Lakes are not only a hub for tourists, but also a stimulating environment for artists and writers alike. Famed names like Ian McEwan, William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter have long been inspired by the landscape where campers, walkers and escapists tend to gather in their droves. The area is varied in what it offers, but some of the more popular destinations include Keswick, Ambleside and Windermere. Each of these towns has a different vibe, but all of them offer beautiful scenery, fresh, pure air and fascinating history within.

Top Attractions

Lake District is all about the lakes and there are plenty of them. A few favourites are Ullswater Lake and Easedale Tarn. A well-known feature is the Old Man of Coniston, a 2634-foot high Fell in the Furness Fells. The childhood home of William Wordsworth is Dove Cottage and his later home, Mount Rydal, are both open to the public.

Kids & Family

The Beatrix Potter Gallery will entertain the kids, and the adults that remember Beatrix Potter from their childhood. Another Potter attraction is her home, Hill Top. The kids will enjoy a trip to Predator Experience where they can walk with wolves and foxes, and watch the falcons fly.

Shopping & Nightlife

There are plenty of great towns and villages throughout the Lakes District for a spot of shopping. Try Windermere, Penrith or Ambleside to name a few. A great shop to visit is Grasmere Ginger Bread Shop. Night life is generally based around some historic, but lively pubs.

Day Tours

Take a day exploring Lakes District and find somewhere to have a wander and a summer picnic like at the South Walney Nature Reserve if you enjoy the wild side of Nature. Or stop off at the ruins of the Hardnott Roman Fort for a day of history. This was one of the furthest outposts from Rome, in the days of the roman Empire. Further Roman ruins can be found with a trip to Hadrians Wall.
