Home to one of the oldest civilizations in the East, China is a marvelous country to visit. Even though it is becoming to take the lead in industrialization, there are still a lot of places which were preserved to keep China’s heritage and history. Here are some of the top ten destinations that regularly attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.

1.) Jiuzhaigou–Located in the Sichuan province, this spot is a wonderful nature reserve that displays the varied beautiful landscapes in China. This place is famous for its crystal blue lakes and multi-tiered waterfalls.

2.) The Bund, Shanghai–The Bund means an embankment. This place is the historical and architectural center of Chinese art within Shanghai. The Bund was also the historical seat of the businessmen in Shanghai during the 1800s and early 1900s.

3.) Giant Pandas–China is a popular home of now endangered Giant Pandas. The largest reserve that is considered home to these lovely creatures is the Wolong Nature Preserve in the Sichuan province. Tourists can observe the pandas in their natural habitat which can also help facilitate research on these cuddly animals.

4.) The Forbidden City–Also known as the Palace Museum, this place is located in the center of Beijing, directly in front of Tiananmen Square. The palatial wall of this structure holds the picture of Mao Zedong. Historically, this place was also the imperial seat of Ming and Qing dynasties from 1420 until 1912. It is now considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

5.) The Terracotta Warriors–Witness the majestic array of ancient China’s might by visiting this breathtaking sight in Xi’An, in the Shanxi province. The thousands of life size figures of terracotta army have individually unique faces, hair, and armor depending on their rank.

6.) The Great Wall–Who has not heard of this marvel from ancient China? Winding across the vastness of the country and covering over 4000 miles, this engineering feat is also visible in space. The construction of this wall began about 2000 years ago to protect the people from raiders outside of ancient China.

7.) Karst Mountains in Yangshuo–This unique landscape in China is famous for its enchanting beauty even among the locals who have seen it for several generations. This mountain is even featured in China’s 20 Renminbi note. The mountain can be best viewed in Yangshuo, a tiny town outside Guilin in the province of Guangxi.

8.) Potala Palace, Lhasa–This historical palace of Dalai Lama, or the Tibetan Buddhist’s spiritual leader, has now been converted into a Chinese museum. This spiritual sanctuary of monks sits at 3700 meters on top of a mountain. This site is famous for its imposing walls surrounding the inner palace.

9.) The Yangtze River and the Three Gorges Dam–Capture the breathtaking views of one of the world’s oldest and most important rivers in the world by visiting the Yangtze. Taking a voyage in this natural marvel will also allow you to see a modern construction of the world’s biggest hydroelectric power station, the Gorges Dam.

10.) Modern Hong Kong–Get a glimpse or stay at the modern version of China in Hong Kong. This former British colony preserves many of China’s ancient and historical architecture you will not miss.
