Summer in Toronto means more things to do. When summer begins to heat up in this great city, there are a number of “festivals” and “events” happening and most of them are free. Many of these activities may require a little fee so they only put little pressure in your pocketbooks. Below are some of the popular things to do by locals and tourists in Toronto comes summer.

Visiting the Harbourfront on Canada Day every 1st of July.  Those who know July 1st in Canada are excited to go to the Harbourfront where it becomes alive with free music and countless patios for coolers and beers. This free music at several stages covers a cross section of International and Canadian bands, and singers. Venues are always free so let your thirst for music get satisfied here.

Speaking of music, the Toronto Music Garden is another excellent place to experience the musical side of Toronto during summer. This beautiful waterfront facility is absolutely free for the entire week when the festival starts. This place is the masterpiece of Yo Yo Ma, a world-renowned cellist. The landscape design was the product of Julie Moir Messervy as an attempt to show the reflection of Bach’s First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello.

Witness Canadian creativity in filmmaking starting from June 10 to June 15 or during every second week of June each year when the Worldwide Short Film Festival begins. Canadian and International films compete for a prestigious opportunity to showcase their art, promote and launch films, and provide networking for film makers in the Festival Symposium and Marketplace.

The Festival of Fire is a choreographed fireworks display every 1st of July as part of Canada commemoration. This annual festival takes place at Ontario Place on Toronto’s waterfront. This famous activity attracts international crowd and attention. The entire festival lasts for 5 days, featuring fireworks display of each continent.

Every July 5 and 6, the city held an annual Corso Italia Toronto Fiesta on St. Clair Avenue to commemorate Italian way of life and contribution to the country. This event allows visitors to experience the rich Italian culture and taste through various famous cuisines. Usually more than 20 bands provide round-the-clock entertainment for everyone on patios, balconies, and street corners.

Another interesting festival that happens every year is the Toronto Pride Festival. This is a week-long celebration spearheaded by Toronto’s Gay Community during the last week of June. About a million people usually participate in this event every year, especially during a grand parade. This once protest and statement event of the 70s to recognize the existence of gay community in the city has now turned itself into a magnificent, inclusive, and award-winning arts and cultural festival known all over the world.

The Toronto International Festival-Caribana is one of Canada’s largest festivals that attracts about 1.3 million tourists every year. This huge Caribbean Festival in North America is also considered the largest street fairs in North America that celebrates the culture and highlights of the Caribbean through elaborate costumes and activities.
