1.) Watch musical performances-Long known as the center of music in Europe, visitors to this great city will never ran out of options in terms of musical plays and performances. There are many outstanding concerts and musical performances all throughout the year. If you have a flair for classical music, try a classical concert of Mozart or Strauss or other great classical composers of Austria. There are usually concerts of this kind every evening in several venues in the old city. From religious ceremonies that can transform the church into concert halls to the music of Vienna in the Volksoper (Opera House) or the famous palace, you will find your musical desire fully satisfied in Vienna. There are also many fabulous churches, museums, and palaces to visit here; all of them giving every form of music you can ever imagine. They say Vienna is music simply because everywhere there is music in this place.
2.) Shop all day in Naschmarkt-Considered the oldest and the largest existing market in the city, the Naschmarkt is known as a “wonderful blend of occident and orient”. You can truly experience the Viennese form of market haggling and shopping here. This market offers all kinds of fresh produce from the countryside. You can visit during weekends here to shop at the flea market that deals with trinkets, clothing, souvenirs, antiques, junk food, and jewelry. This market usually opens at 6 in the morning.
3.) Take a bite-In a land where there is an abundance of sachertorte, a deep, rich chocolate cake complete with chocolate icing and jam filling, it is not surprising that Marie Antoinette uttered the words, “let them eat cake”. Sachertorte and coffee makes a perfect snack for most locals. You can savor the richness of true sachertorte in Sacher Hotel or any other coffee houses in and around the city. Locals would prefer a not too sweet or heavy type when taken with coffee.
4.) Catch a glimpse at the Spanish Riding School-Also known as the “Dancing Horses of Vienna” or the “White Ballet” because of the white Lipizzan stallions, this show is one of the must-see attractions in Vienna. You can witness the morning training sessions to see how wonderful these beautiful horses are trained. Tourists are also allowed access to the stables for a more personal encounter with the famous horses.
5.) Visit the underground-Some of the city’s wonderful sites are out of view because they are located underground. Witness the silent works of Viennese sculptors that adorn the resting places of the Vienna’s Habsburg emperors. There are several places where the remains of Austria’s elite and powerful were buried. Some of the most popular attractions of this type are in Kapuzinergruft (Capuchin Church) where the bodies are located. The intestines of the Habsburg monarchy are located in the crypt of St. Stephansdom, while their hearts are in the crypt in St. Augustine Church.
