Oklahoma has more of the original Route 66 than any other state in America. The famous road enters the state near Quapaw and goes diagonally across Oklahoma to Texas totaling 390 miles. Today there are two interstate highways, the I-44 and I-40 that run parallel with the Route 66: this means tourists can enjoy the beautiful sights of the Route 66 away from the heavy traffic. The Mother Road has quite a few historic places, as well as some new attractions and highlights.
Downstream Casino Resort is the first landmark along Route 66 as the road enters Oklahoma from Kansas near Quapaw. Downstream is a 222 room hotel and casino with slot machines, table games, poker room and all various entertainment opportunities. There is also a spa, a golf course and a restaurant.
Coleman Theater in Miami is a movie theater built in 1929. The theater today is open to the tourists, so the exquisite interior of the building can be admired. The interior is decorated in Louis XV style with gold leaf trim, mahogany staircase, stained glass and a spectacular 2,000 pound chandelier. Tourists also love the fully restored pipe organ called the “The Mighty Wurlitzer”.
Waylan’s KuKu Burger is a fast food chain opened in the 60’s. There is a restaurant still open in Miami, so you can eat and relax in a historic fast food.
Afton Station in Afton is a D-X Station built in the 1930′s. The station today is fully restored and houses many Route 66 memorabilia as well as a number of vintage automobiles, especially Packards. The station is owned by two brothers, David and Laurel Kane. David is passionate about restoring vintage cars, while Laurel is interested in Route 66 and the people who travel this historic road, so he really enjoys meeting tavelers from all around the world.
Vinita is the next stop along Route 66 in Oklahoma. The town gained its name after Vinnie Ream, a sculptress who at age 18 was commissioned to sculpt a life size statue of Lincoln for the United States Capitol. Today the town has nearly 6,500 friendly residents. It is a bustling and prosperous little community where new homes are popping up almost every day.
Summerside Vineyard and Winery is another must see along Route 66 Oklahoma. The winery has a great tasting room where tourists are welcome. They can also get help to choose between a superb range of Oklahoma wines and grape juices, from dry red wines to sweeter whites. The specialty of the house is the Route 66 Red Wine.
